ABSTRACT

Aim: This study aimed to assess the reporting characteristics of systematic review abstracts published in the proceedings of the Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Odontológica (SBPqO) meeting. Methods: We selected abstracts published in the SBPqO meeting proceedings of 2019 and 2020, mentioning that a systematic review was conducted in the title, objective or methods sections. One researcher performed the screening and the data extraction after a pilot test training. The following data were extracted: affiliation of the primary author, dental specialization, the term "systematic review" mentioned in the title, reporting of the objective, reporting of eligibility criteria, reporting of information sources, reporting of the number of included studies and if a meta-analysis was performed. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed with data summarized as frequencies. Results: We included 235 abstracts. A total of 20 studies were from the Universidade de Uberlândia (8.5%), and the main specialization was Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry, with 47 studies (20%). Most of the studies mentioned the term "systematic review" in the title (n=219; 93.2%) and reported the objective (n=231; 98.3%). A great majority of studies did not report the eligibility criteria (n=97; 41.3%) or it was classified as unclear (n=96; 40.8%). The great majority of studies only reported the databases searched (n=103; 43.8%) or databases and date of search (n=74; 31.5%). Most of the studies reported the number of included studies (n=204; 86.8%). Conclusion: Based on this study, the reporting characteristics of systematic review abstracts published in the proceedings of the SBPqO meeting are satisfactory. However, there is room for improvement

ABSTRACT

The animal teeth of the different species (human, equine, pig, etc.) are histologically constituted by four fundamental tissues: enamel, dentin, cement and dental pulp. Their composition, structure, morphology and size are dissimilar for each gender. According to numerous investigations, bovine teeth would be the ones of choice because they are easy to obtain and have very few or no differences, both at the macro and microscopic levels, with respect to human teeth. The objective of this review is to provide updated information about the histological characteristics of bovine dental tissues and deepen the knowledge of the similarities and differences between bovine and human teeth, supporting other comparative studies and promoting the use of bovine dental pieces in research work in dentistry (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: To investigate the scientific production concerning orofacial clefts presented at a Brazilian congress, between 2009 and 2019. Methods: A bibliometric and observational study was conducted, though the analysis of abstracts published in the annals of the Annual Meetings of the Brazilian Society of Dental Research (SBPqO), concerning orofacial clefts. Data referring to the abstracts (year of publication, place of study - federative unit, type of fissure, broad area of knowledge, design, type of institution, receipt of funding) were collected and organized through descriptive and analytical statistics. The Mann-Whitney non-parametric test was applied (p < 0.05). Results: Among 28,578 abstracts, 194 (0.67%) concerned orofacial clefts. Most of them dealt with more than one type of cleft (n = 180; 93.3%) and were mainly conducted in public institutions (n = 128; 66%), in the Southeast (n = 121; 62.3%) and South (n = 23; 11.8%) regions, and without funding (60.8%). The most common field of knowledge was Epidemiology/Public Health (n = 60; 30.9%), with a predominance of cross-sectional studies (n = 185; 43.8%). There was a statistically significant association between funding and higher sample size. Conclusion:Few studies have investigated orofacial clefts in SBPqO. An in-depth investigation in this field of research allows for the identification of problems that make it possible to organize, plan, and monitor specialized care for people with these anomalies, as well as create conditions for the decentralization of care by expanding the service network to other locations in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The Brazilian Dental Journal (BDJ) was officially launched in 1990, stimulated by the courage and boldness of researchers dedicated to teaching and research in dentistry. The journal was conceived in a worldwide coverage and universal language to allow publication of the results of Brazilian studies, which otherwise would not be accessible to the scientific dental community. In the year we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of BDJ, this article presents a brief overview of Brazilian dental research and a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in this journal as a contribution to our readers and fellow researchers. The purpose was to identify the mot frequent categories of study, the most published areas of dentistry and BDJ's top 50 most-cited articles in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases. A search was performed on all BDJ online issues published from 1990 to 2019. In this period, BDJ published 1,710 articles. Based on their distribution by category of study, 557 articles were in the basic research/dental materials area, 527 in the basic research/biology area and 280 in the clinical research area. Eight articles were cited more than 100 times in the Scopus database and 266 times in the Google Scholar database. Endodontics was the most published area. This overview of BDJ production over those 30 years allows establishing a profile of the characteristics, impact and trends of the published studies, as well as the journal's contribution to the top 50 most-cited articles in the Scopus and Google Scholar databases.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To explore socioeconomic, educational and research factors associated with dental research productivity at the state level in Brazil. Methods: The authors used the Scopus database to identify dental articles published from 2006 to 2016 associated with Brazilian universities at the state level. Several social, economic, educational and research structure variables were obtained from the census and National Research Council to predict the rate of articles per 100 thousand inhabitants among the 27 Brazilian states. Rates were fitted in linear weighted least-squared regression with stepwise technique. Twenty-two variables were grouped in six blocks (social, economic, general education, dental education, research workforce and structure). Results: A total of 21189 articles were published, and the state of São Paulo accounted for 46%, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 9.4%; four states did not publish any articles. There were an average (± standard deviation) of 2.6 (±1.98) published articles per 100 researchers and 13.4 (±9.6) articles per 100 thousand inhabitants. Research structure and workforce explained 92.4% and 87.2% of state variability, respectively, while the final model explained 94.5%. One extra PhD and one extra undergraduate researcher per 100 thousand inhabitants were associated with 11.3 more and 3.5 fewer articles, respectively, while every 10 points (range 0-100) on the Human Development Index (Education Component) was associated with 3.3 more articles. Conclusion: State scientific output has several associated factors, but research workforce and general education variables seem to be good predictors. Large disparities among state research outputs have been described and must be addressed by research and development policies

Aim: To outline the profile of the Scientific Initiation advisors of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University of Minas Gerais over a 10-year period. Methods: A retrospective assessment was made regarding the education, career, and experience of postgraduate and undergraduate guidance rendered by the institution's faculty who advised students who were fellows of the Scientific Initiation Program from 2006 to 2016. Based on information from registered curricula in the CNPq Lattes platform, the intellectual production of teachers was analyzed, both quantitatively and qualitatively, according to Qualis 2015. To evaluate the correlation between the amount of Scientific Initiation guidance rendered and the other numerical variables, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used, and to verify if there was a difference between the amount of Scientific Initiation guidance rendered between the categories of categorical variables, the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. Results: Just over 35% (n = 44) of the total number of teachers of the institution, with different degrees, tenure, and career levels, allocated in the four departments, advised fellows during this period, of which 18 received ongoing guidance, almost 90% of which were linked to the Postgraduate Program. The areas responsible for the largest number of scholarships in effect cane from the fields of Pediatric Dentistry and Social and Preventive Dentistry. The amount of completed and ongoing Scientific Initiation guidance rendered per advisor showed a significant positive correlation (rs, p < 0.05) with qualified scientific output (≥ B3) and with the amount of stricto sensu postgraduate guidance rendered, but was not correlated with other productions and advice. Conclusion: The profile of Scientific Initiation advisors between 2006-2016 was diverse, with different areas of activity, career levels, and titles. However, we observed that participation in the program is minimal, given the total number of professors with a degree, capacity to provide advice, and the number of undergraduate students registered at the institution. This is mainly due to the number of Scientific Initiation scholarships failing to contemplate all teachers who enrolled in the program.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the profile of Brazilian publications in laser/ LED from 2015 to 2019. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted, using indirect documentation to analyze the papers presented at SBPqO meetings from 2015 to 2019. Results: 563 abstracts involving the use of laser/LED were evaluated and subsequently classified according to higher education research institution, state where the research was conducted, dental specialty, and type of study. Most of the abstracts involving the laser/LED were concentrated in 2019 (21.7%), with low-power lasers being the most frequently used (54.1%). Most of the abstracts were concentrated in the State of São Paulo (67.3%), with the Southeast region containing the largest number of works (76.9%). Regarding the higher education institution, the state universities produced a larger number of the studies (47.8%). Restorative dentistry was the specialty that most developed studies in the laser/LED area (21.7%). Most abstracts (73.7%) were classified as basic laboratory research. Most of the selected studies received no financial support (54.7%). Among the funding agencies mentioned, the Research Support Foundations were the most prevalent (26.6%). Most studies did not mention the Research Ethics Committee (97.5%). There was a statistically significant association between public institutions and the receipt of funding (p < 0.005). Conclusion: Most of the abstracts were identified in 2019, with a greater number of studies conducted in the State of São Paulo, in state institutions across the country, and in the specialty area of restorative dentistry. Laboratory-type studies were the most prevalent. Moreover, most studies received no funding for research.
